Getting Started with SAM

A Planning Year Option

SAM can become operational at any time in an academic year (AY) or, while implementation is anticipated in a subsequent AY, a planning year protocol can be engaged first. Planning for SAM entails two processes: first, information sharing and addressing questions from school and district-level personnel, including parents; second, site visits to schools and identification of district and school level personnel to prepare for implementation of SAM in the subsequent AY.

boardThe information sharing phase of the planning year involves SAMSCHOOLS, LLC Directors, Wayne Sailor and Blair Roger visiting the district for a two-day event in the Fall Term. One of the days is typically devoted to district-level meetings with administrators and possibly others including IHE and/or community agency representatives, at the discretion of the district superintendent. The second day is typically devoted to site visits to schools that have signaled an interest in engaging SAM. Sailor and Roger meet with principals, visit classrooms and meet with selected school staff and parents in a general question and answer format.

A second two-day visit is scheduled for the spring term which includes either Sailor or Roger and a second SAMSCHOOLS, LLC member of the Technical Assistance Faculty to collect baseline data using the SAMAN instrument. Baseline SAMAN data from each school that anticipates starting with SAM in the subsequent AY are collected at the time of this second visit and after processing and analysis, returned to the school principal, to form the basis for development of the schools’ Action Plan in Year 1.
